Tested Using Methodology v1.0Overall Verdict
The comparison between the Panasonic FlashXpress (NB-G110P) and the Hamilton Beach Easy Reach 4 Slices(31344DA) shows that a digital toaster oven isn’t necessarily much better than an analog one. The former has a slightly higher score overall but we don’t think that was enough to justify it being twice the price of the latter.
The Panasonic has a unique auto-pull rack mechanism. Unfortunately, we did not find it to be significantly more convenient than the basic rack on the Hamilton. In addition, the auto-pull rack stopped us from maximizing the cooking chamber's already limited space.
The Hamilton has a neat roll-top door that can make bringing food in and out easier and also save some counter space. Other than that, the oven only has two analog control dials for the timer and temperature.
The FlashXpress has a number of cooking presets that are typical in a Japanese appliance, but they aren’t so useful. Moreover, the oven’s timer and temperature range aren’t flexible enough to actually be convenient. We do appreciate the interior light which is rare in a small unit though.
Despite its not-so-high power output, the Panasonic could reach and maintain a very high temperature so its cooking times are much shorter than its peers. This allowed it to score big against the Hamilton in baking pizza, whole chicken, and fries. However, this strength when combined with a limited toast setting resulted in a much less desirable outcome than the Hamilton’s when toasting bread.
