- 5 Installing a Wall Oven
Single wall ovens are adequate for most people, and may add a bit more capacity and convenience to a range oven. Double wall ovens add a lot more capacity and allow you to cook different dishes at different temperatures. Which is the best wall oven for you, depends on your needs, your budget, and the space you have available.
Why Wall Ovens Are a Good Investment
- Key kitchen upgrades, especially a wall oven with steam cooking, can boost your home resale price by over 30%.
- On average, you’ll recoup a little more than 80 percent of the cost of a minor kitchen remodel, which includes a major appliance upgrade.
- A wall oven reduces traffic between cooktop and oven users, and gives you more ways to mix and match appliances, like having an electric wall oven with a gas cooktop.
- Unlike range ovens, which force you to bend over to add or remove dishes, wall ovens are installed at an easy-to-heat height. That means less strain on your back.
- With a wall oven, you can still keep your standing range oven but add more capacity and flexibility.
Best Wall Oven Buying Guide
Here are some of the key points to consider when buying a wall oven:
1. Electric or Gas
Electric wall ovens are easier and cheaper to install compared to gas ovens which require extra piping and professional installation. For this reason, there are a lot more electric models to choose from. Electric ovens are also better at maintaining a more consistent and even heat than gas, so most people will choose an electric wall oven.
Wall ovens come in three widths: 24, 27, and 30 inches. The cut-out dimensions are a little smaller in order to create a neat fitting overlap for that built-in look.
Thirty-inch wall ovens are the most popular size because they fit most cabinetry and have the largest capacity. Unless cabinetry is an issue, most people will go with a 30-inch wall oven.
For gas wall ovens, you’re mostly limited to 24-inch ovens or smaller. Larger 30-inch gas wall ovens are less easy to come by, unless your budget can afford a pro-style range.
3. Single, Double and Combo Wall Ovens
A single wall oven has just one oven unit, but some models may also have the option of a warming drawer—at an additional cost to the price tag and your cut-out dimensions.
With a double wall oven you have two oven units and, hence, two different cooking zones. This can save time and allow several people to use the oven at once.
A combination oven or ‘combo’ has a primary oven, in addition to the convenience of a high-spec microwave. The upper microwave unit often doubles as a conventional oven, a warmer, and may sometimes include a convection fan.
Most 30-inch wall ovens have between 4.5 and 5 cubic feet of space. That’s a little less than what a comparable standing range can offer, and while it won’t fit a huge turkey roast, it can easily handle a 20-pound bird. A 27-inch oven has slightly less than 4.5 cubic feet, but all the other features and functions are pretty much the same.
If you buy a double oven, both ovens will have exactly the same capacity. Sometimes they will have matching features, but not always.
Combination ovens or ‘combos’ are a little different. The smaller upper oven will always be slightly less than 2.0 cubic feet, and the lower primary oven between 4.5 and 5.0 cubic feet.
A convection oven has a fan that circulates air around the oven cavity, cooking food faster and more evenly. Basic convection uses a basic fan, whereas ‘true’ or European convection has a heating element around the fan. Convection models can add an additional $200 or more to the price tag, and true convection costs a little more.
Because convection comes at a price, there are ‘hybrid’ double ovens where only one of the ovens has a convection fan. A convection oven, however, will use 20% less energy a month for cooking compared to a standard oven.
6. French Doors S’il Vous Plaît
French doors look quite stylish and swing out to either side. With no door opening down the front, you can reach your arm further into the oven. These designs add an additional $200‒$300 to the cost of the oven, and they’re only found on high-end models.
7. Settings and Controls
Your wall oven will have either an LCD touch-panel control or a combination of digital and physical controls. Fully digital controls look sleek, but dial knobs are easier to use, easier to fix, and more familiar. For double ovens and combos, there are separate controls for each oven, usually on the same control panel. Many models now have smart controls, which use WiFi and an app to adjust settings. High-end models may also have voice command controls.
8. Other Features
The price point of wall ovens is also decided by features like steam cooking, power ratings of the oven elements, rack designs, temperature probes, temperature sensors, proofing modes, and cooking presets.
For most wall ovens, self-cleaning, delay start, control locks, automatic shutdown, and digital clocks are pretty standard.

1. LG 30 Inch Double Wall Oven – Best To Buy In 2019
View on Amazon: LG 30″ Smart Convection Double Wall Oven
Versatility and convenience are the key features of this LG double wall oven. Both ovens have identical features and functions, which make them a lot easier to use. Each oven has a convection fan, two heavy duty racks, and a favourite recipe feature, and both can do dough proofing as well as the usual bake, broil and roast functions.
These double ovens have a polished stainless steel exterior and wide viewing windows, so they look spacious as well. The distinctive blue interiors have three halogen lights, which help to light up the interior.
There are four heavy duty racks, which can stay in the oven for self-cleaning. Five rack positions in each oven provide a good range of cooking positions.
Each oven has two self-cleaning modes—a 10 minute steam clean for light spills, and longer, high-temperature cycles for heavier messes. Neither oven has a temperature probe for cooking meat, but these can be purchased separately at a minimal price.
This LG has convection bake, roast, broil, and crisp as well as traditional, non-convection baking options. A convection fan reduces cooking times and produces better results with browning and crisping. For foods like breads and cakes that need to conserve more moisture, you can choose not to use convection.
There is a preheat function and a beep that notifies you when the oven has reached temperature. A nice addition is the Favorite option that allows you to enter the temperature and cooking mode for a favorite recipe.
Other useful functions include keep warm—for both ovens—as well as dough proofing and a delay bake timer. The package also comes with a broiling pan and a baking grid
The LG has quite a busy control panel, but it’s intuitive and easy to use:
All oven functions are just one touch away, and there’s the option of using an app or voice commands to adjust settings, start the oven remotely, or clean the interior. You can store your favorite recipes, search for Food Channel recipes, or sync with your oven.
What People Like
- Even baking
- Good preheating
- User-friendly interface
- Good self-cleaning
- Smart controls
What People Don’t Like
- Fan a little loud
- Blue interior takes getting used to
2. GE 30 Inch Double Electric Wall Oven – Best Affordable Double Oven
View on Amazon: GE 30 Inch Electric Double Wall Oven in Stainless Steel
This GE JTD5000ENES double wall oven is a good compromise of key features and affordability. You get five cubic feet for each oven, which is the most you can expect, and although only one oven is convection, it utilizes superior true convection with an extra heating element. Both ovens have a more powerful 10-pass bake element, heavy duty racks, and internal temperature probes.
These double wall ovens come in a nice range of colors, including black, slate, stainless steel, and white.
Most wall ovens have a hidden eight-pass bake element, but this GE model adds more heat power with 10 passes, or heating loops.
The racks are not just heavy-duty racks, which can remain in the over for self-cleaning; they are also roll-out racks with extra mobility and additional stop locks for safety.
The upper oven can be used for bake, broil, and roast in convection or non-convection mode. The lower, non-convection oven bakes, broils, proofs dough, and has a seperate keep warm function.
With the Scan-to-cook function— you can scan in the temperature, cooking mode, and time from food package barcodes via an app. These ovens also have an internal temperature probe, so you can know exactly how your oven is performing.
A couple of drawbacks: The cramped control panel takes getting used to, and the temperature settings are not very intuitive. Alternatively, you can use the WiFi app control, which operates through the GE Appliances Kitchen app (on Google Play or iTunes) or you can connect via voice controls with Alexa, Google Assist, IFTTT, Nest, and others.
What People Like
- Easy to install
- High-quality racks
- Quiet fan
- Wi-Fi controls
What People Don’t Like
- Controls not simple
- Cannot adjust temperature during cooking without reset
An identical model is also available in 27 inches with two 4.3 cu.ft. ovens.
3. LG 30 Inch Microwave Double Wall Oven – Best Combo Oven
View on Amazon: LG 30 Inch Microwave Double Wall Oven
Three key features give this LG an edge over most other combos. The lower convection oven combines with a steam cook function that helps retain moisture—otherwise lost at high heat or through convection. The 1.7 cubic feet upper oven doubles up as an additional convection oven, and has a unique turbo cook feature.
Lower Oven Features
The key feature of the primary 4.7 cubic feet oven is the steam-cook mode. Convection fans and electric heat tend to create a rather dry cooking environment, but this can be overcome with steam cooking, which is great for delicate meats, vegetables, fish, cakes, and bread.
Another feature of the lower oven are two heavy duty racks, which can stay in the oven during the 10-minute steam clean or longer self-cleaning cycles. The interior is blue, and there are three halogen lights for extra clear viewing.
Upper Oven Features
The upper oven has a number of different functions. One is SensorCook, which is used for room temperature foods. The sensor scans for moisture content to determine cooking time; you can then choose from nine preset food types such as rice, casserole, soup, or pizza.
Another feature is SpeedCook, which combines the power of halogen lights, the heating elements, and the microwave. This mode is for roasting meat, chicken, and vegetables, or frozen pizza, cakes, pies, and breads. There’s an additional AutoCook function with 28 presets for common foods, as well as defrost, soften, melt, convection bake, and broil functions.
This combo oven can be criticized for its digital-only control panel. While the basic, key functions are just a touch away, other operations require you to remember a few patterns. It may be challenging for children or tech-challenged adults. Like all LG smart appliances, this oven connects through LG SmartThinQ.
What People Like
- Elegant and stylish
- Useful Smart Controls
- Steam cooking
- Quiet fans
What People Don’t Like
- Upper oven controls too complex but manageable
- Microwave difficult for children to use
4. GE 24 Inch Single Wall Oven – Best Gas Oven In 2019
View on Amazon: GE 24″ Stainless Steel Gas Single Wall Oven
Out of the limited range of affordable gas wall ovens, this 24-inch GE came out on top because it looks good, has a strong body, and does particularly well at broiling. There is a convenient preheat function, and the gliding stock racks are a nice addition.
This GE gas wall oven has a frameless door for a more stylish and flush-fitting look. The oven is only 2.7 cubic feet, which is much smaller than competing models but still enough to bake or roast one dish at a time. You may have trouble fitting large roasts like Thanksgiving turkeys, however.
Owners are happy with its baking results and temperature consistency. It doesn’t fit a full-sized broil pan and cookie trays can’t go in sideways. And some people find the cooling fan a little noisy.
The drawer below is for storage; it’s not a warmer or broiler drawer, but most people seem to appreciate the space. There are two gliding racks for increased mobility and stop locks for safety, but they must be taken out during self-cleaning.
People find the controls simple and easy to use, with some bare bones features. The operating fuel is natural gas, but if you prefer LP gas you’ll have to buy a separate conversion kit.
5. Summit 30 Inch Convection Oven – Best 30 inch Gas Wall Oven
View on Amazon: Summit SGWO30SS
This oven looks great and offers a host of features and performance specs that allow it to stand apart. The elegant design, dual-speed convection, and three-rack baking help to justify its steep price.
This Summit gas wall oven, made and designed in Italy, has a sturdy frame with a brushed finish giving it a professional look. There are two knob controls—one for the oven and one for the boiler. It also has push buttons for the oven’s interior light, timer, and convection settings.
The oven is 3.0 cubic feet, which is small but not terrible. You can choose not to use the convection mode on its own or combine it with the broil function for better roasting and cripsing.
There’s an additional ‘forced air’, or dual speed convection feature, which can increase the speed of the convection fan, thus speeding up the cooking time. Alternatively, you can use this mode to defrost frozen foods.
It comes with three oven racks and a porcelain broiling plate, but there’s no self-cleaning function. If you wish to use propane gas, it comes with a conversion kit.
6. GE Cafe 30 Inch Wall Oven – Best High End Double and Single Ovens
View on Amazon: GE Cafe 30 Inch Smart Electric Wall Oven
This GE Cafe series receives consistently strong ratings among owners. The single oven is more popular because it adds style and convenience at a more affordable price. The 5.0 capacity for each oven is the highest you’re likely to find. It includes true convection, a high-grade 10-pass bake element, an impressive 3,400 watt dual broil element, and elegant knob controls.
Other features include a low-temperature function for dough proofing and yogurt making, as well as a keep warm function. The 10-pass bake element speeds up preheating and creates a more intense heat.
There are six rack positions for each oven, so the space is much more flexible compared with other ovens.
Additional high-end features include a heavy-duty rack and two roller racks. Some users complain the racks don’t glide very easily. The racks can stay in the oven during steam cleaning, or for the longer high-temperature self-cleaning cycles.
One of the nicest things about these ovens is the control panel, which has knob controls that are easy and intuitive to use. With the left knob you can choose the mode, and with the right one you can set the temperature. Some users dislike how you can only adjust temperatures in 25°F increments. Smart controls operate through the GE Appliances Kitchen app (available through Google Play or iTunes).
7. Bosch 27 Inch 800 Series Wall Oven – Best Single Oven
View on Amazon: Bosch HBN8451UC 800 27″ Electric Single Wall Oven – Convection
Bosch wall ovens are among the most popular and well reviewed. They don’t come with many fancy extras, but people love the design and sleek cabinetry fit. This 800 Series has true convection, a multi-rack baking mode, fast preheating, and a few other nice functions.
The Bosch 800 Series oven has convection, 4.1 cubic feet of oven space, and multi-rack baking. In addition, there’s a rapid preheat function and a low-temperature mode for dough proofing. It’s also got a pizza mode, which deploys extra convection for a crispier crust.
There are two ordinary flat racks and one telescopic rack with rollers and a stock lock for handling heavy dishes. All racks must come out for the longer, high-heat self cleaning cycle.
The control panel is spacious with press buttons and an LCD screen for one-touch access to most functions. If you need a warmer drawer, you can purchase a matching unit separately. If you prefer a larger size, the 30 inch model is identical and a bit larger at 4.6 cubic feet.
