Nothing beats the mixing ability, power, and versatility of a reliable electric mixer, especially when you often deal with mixing tasks that are time-consuming or impossible to do by hand properly.
If you are someone who enjoys baking or finds kneading bread dough is your life’s passion; you’ll want to check out our list of the best mixers, which can do almost anything; from whipping up egg whites or cream, to blending even the hardest ingredients.
Key Differences Between Various Types Of Electric Mixers
There are two different types of electric mixers: stand mixers and hand mixers. While the handheld models offer convenience and portability, the stand ones are much more versatile as well as best suited for those who bake regularly.
Though stand mixers and hand mixers are different in many ways— size, power, price, and functionality, these two models are built to handle a variety of batters and mixes with ease.
If you think the stand mixer is a unitasker, you’re completely wrong. As not only does it take the hassle out of mixing, whisking, whipping and kneading, a stand mixer also excels at delivering better and more consistent results compared to its peer.
Thanks to its large capacity and big, metal balloon whisks, these models can take the hard work out of making large batches of cake, dough, or batter, making it faster and easier to handle heavy mixtures than using other methods. Give your arms a rest and use a stand mixer!
Stand mixers are intelligent devices, which get the job done on their own. Since these models are fully automatic and require much less time and effort on your part compared with non-electric mixing methods, particularly if you often deal with lots of sticky dough. However, stand mixers are not plug-and-forget devices.
You’ll want to watch your machine as it works or be constantly back and forth from it. Though it definitely takes a huge amount of the work for you, it’s not like an Instant Pot where you can set it and walk away.
In general, stand mixers are quite a bit more expensive than hand mixers. This is due to their size, capabilities and features: they usually have more power, more durable parts and extra attachments.
Simply speaking, hand mixers are eggbeater type mixers that include a motor. Unlike stand mixers which tend to take up quite a lot of space on your counter, a hand mixer really shines as a small and easy-to-store replacement for light duty jobs like making cakes, whisking up egg whites and kneading cookie dough.
For the occasional baker or anyone whose kitchen space is not roomy enough, this hand-held mixing device is just for you.
A typical hand mixer is often less expensive and not as strong as a stand mixer. That’s why it usually takes more time to knead a thick batter or dough. Though they may not have as many capabilities as a stand mixer, they do offer a flexibility and portability their counterpart does not.
Stand mixers must stay in one spot when working. They are only compatible with some particular mixing bowls, which properly lock into the base when the machines are working. However, hand mixers can work wherever you need to in the kitchen and with all types of bowls. That being said, these models do require physical work to be operated. And because the mixing bowl is not in a fixed position, you just need to be mindful that it doesn’t slip and is deep enough to avoid splashing out mixture.
How to Choose The Best Mixer: A Buying Guide
A good stand mixer is a machine that never jumps around when kneading heavy dough. Apart from efficiently mixing all the ingredients at the same time, it should also feature ergonomic design. You should be able to use each attachment and setting with ease.
A good hand mixer should be completely comfortable to hold while still strong and sturdy enough to tackle a wide variety of cooking tasks. Keep in mind that your hand mixer won’t be as efficient as a stand mixer, so do not expect that it will work better and faster than its peer.
It is important to find a balance. Try to determine the weight of your desired appliance to make sure it is not too heavy. If you are holding it to mix for extended periods of time, will it lose its appeal? On the other hand, don’t choose something that is too light or you may feel you don’t have enough control. This type of product tends to vibrate and move around too much while in use, especially at high speeds. As a result, you will be focused on trying to control your machine rather than enjoying its convenience.
It is also good to look for a device that has attachments designed with quick-release mechanisms so that they can be put on or taken off without using tools.
Design and power addressed, here are some other features you will want to consider:
Range of speed
Electric mixers provide a quick and easy way to create consistent mixtures with a lot less manual effort on your part. Many have the advantage of allowing users to choose a specific speed for different recipes.
While high speeds are recommended for whipping cream and egg whites, a low speed comes in handy for kneading delicate batter and will help prevent contents from splashing out of the mixing container. Check to see what speed settings are included in your desired model.
To make the cleaning process much more pain free, check to see whether the attachments included with your mixer, such as a whisk, paddle, and dough hook, are dishwasher safe or at least easy to clean.
Many affordable stand mixers feature a power hub, which is not really necessary but can be useful for those who like having the option to take full advantage of their versatile machine. The power hub will allow users to connect multiple accessories, like a food grinder or pasta maker, thus increasing the machine’s capability. If you make a vast variety of dishes that require many different tools, this could be something you’d enjoy.
Electric mixers with multiple metal beater attachments are becoming more popular, as these models make it more convenient for users to handle a variety of recipes. A paddle for beating batters and cookie dough, a dough hook for kneading bread, and a whisk for whipping egg whites are optional attachments you can expect in models with prices starting from $150.
A lot of people like hand mixers equipped with storage containers which are extremely handy for when you want to keep your machine and all of its accessories in one place, neatly and tidily.

Here are our pick of the Best Mixers.
1. KitchenAid KSM150PSER Stand Mixer – Best Stand Mixer to Buy in 2020
Everyone should have the KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer in their home. It’s durable, multi-purpose, and attractive. It makes baking a joy and fits perfectly on the countertop under the cupboards.
Why You Will Like It
This mixer isn’t as big as you might think it’d be, but it’s still heavy duty and solid as a rock. It has a powerful motor with plenty of low-end torque to push through even the most difficult concoctions. The best part about the KitchenAid KSM150PSER is that it comes in 20 different color options, creating the opportunity for buyers to find the one that best matches their style and personality. There is no way you wouldn’t be able to find one that is an aesthetically pleasing addition to your kitchen.
Now on to what people like about the machine: The mixing beaters work fine for mixing dry or wet ingredients. The dough hook has great performance for a standard bread dough. The 5-quart stainless steel bowl with a comfortable handle offers enough capacity to mix dough for 9 dozen cookies, 4 loaves of bread or 7 pounds of mashed potatoes in a single batch!
All the attachments (pasta maker, pasta rollers, grinder, shredder, juicer, sausage stuffer) work very well. An added bonus is that they’re entirely dishwasher-safe for a quick and easy cleanup.
More impressively, the attachments can be used with older mixers, meaning you don’t need to worry about not being able to buy new attachments as they come available even after you’ve had yours for years.
When you set it up for the first time, there’s adjustment screws on the head of the mixer. Put your mixing blade in and adjust the screw so the tip of the blade almost touches the bottom of the bowl. No instructions are provided, so it may take you about 10 minutes to complete the installation. It would obviously be better if there were instructions on how to do that.
The splatter shield also leaves a lot to be desired. It does not attach to the bowl firmly; it is a bit warped so it does not sit down properly all the way around, and it needs to be held in place by hand. It isn’t really needed if the speed of the mixer is started slow and not raised too much while mixing ingredients. Hence, the shield has been squirreled away by most in a dark place as a useless piece of equipment.
Bottom line: We could give hundreds of reasons why we’re so satisfied with this product, but all we want to say is that this mixer is everything you will ever need. Don’t hesitate to buy it, you will not be disappointed!
2. Bosch Universal Plus Mixer – Best Commercial Mixer
Not only is this machine a super useful kitchen appliance, it also has been built and engineered very well indeed, more like a commercial product than a consumer product. If you are looking at quality and value, look no further. The Bosch mixer is the superlative mixer for your kitchen.
Why You Will Like It
The Bosch Universal Plus is popularly known for its bread making ability. With a powerful motor, this kitchen mixer has no problem in kneading a BIG bowl of dough in about 25% less time than many other regular mixers. When you turn it on, you can get the feel of the full 800 watts of power it is capable of by its roaring sound. However, it’s still considerably quieter than some traditional mixers.
Besides kneading dough, this machine also can tear up just about anything you throw at it. Of course, the results always come out beautifully. When using this, we think you might need to modify your recipes slightly in terms of kneading or mixing time: this machine does a pretty efficient job in less time than you expect!
In terms of performance, the knead arm does a great job of mixing and kneading. It doesn’t take up a lot of space and the convenient suction cups on the base make sure it stays on your countertop. The dough hook is of industrial-strength, and the mixing paddles do a great job with thinner batters. Plus, there is a removable splash guard around the rim that allows users to add extra flour while the device is running without making a mess.
The bowl has an awesome design which is very handy for baking as compared to other stand mixers, and also offers easy clean-up. However, due to the fact that this part is all made from plastic to prevent the dough from sticking to it, you cannot use any hot liquids in it, so it wouldn’t be able to make marshmallows, IMBC or meringues.
Another small consideration is that it would be great to have a kneading arm scraper device to draw material from the bowl walls into the kneading arm. Other than that, we would not change a thing.
Bottom line: We are truly very impressed with this machine. There is no doubt that this mixer is one of the best in the market. It isn’t cheap, but if you cook and bake a lot, it’s well worth the investment in the long run.
3. Ankarsrum Original AKM 6220 Red Stand Mixer – Best Luxury Mixer
We absolutely love this mixer, especially for heavy things like breads and cookies. It works exactly as advertised by the manufacturers and dealers. Although it’s an expensive machine, we’re glad to say that it is definitely a valuable lifetime investment which will be with you for years to come.
Why You Will Like It
The advantages of this machine are numerous. There seems to be nothing that it can’t handle. Right out of the box you can immediately see the very high build quality of this device. It’s built like a tank that’s meant to last a lifetime. It also has an enormous capacity for home use. We have used this for heavy batches of dough that can burn out most home mixers but this unit hasn’t even shown the slightest sign of strain. It does the job well without any grinding and gnashing of the motor.
Interestingly, it runs more quietly and uses less electricity than the Bosch Universal. Plus, you can add ingredients and see how it is blended without having to stop the mixer and lift the beating tool.
In regards to the attachments, the machine comes with a big, open bowl to view and dump ingredients in as well as two different mixing attachments for regular mixing duties (including whipping). It also has a timer on the switch that many users will really appreciate. You can set the timer and go work on something else until it shuts off. Frankly speaking, every part of this mixer is extremely well designed.
Unlike previous reviewed models, The Ankarsrum does require some studying of how to use it. You can’t figure out how to use the mixer on your own. But, once you go through the short learning curve (simply take a few minutes to watch one of the many videos that are posted on YouTube), you’ll be all set.
The Ankarsrum Original AKM 6220 is our favorite home mixer. However, there are still some things that we dislike. Firstly, the roller tool can really be used for just about everything except whipping creams and egg whites. Secondly, for the price point, we cannot believe that the gears on the beating tool are plastic which could potentially break at the slightest provocation.
Bottom line: If you’ve been using a conventional mixer for bread dough, and don’t want to learn anything new, then don’t bother with the Ankarsrum. On the other hand, if you like learning new things, and want to expand your baking repertoire, then we would highly recommend this mixer. Yes, this may be more expensive but in the long run the extra cost is totally worth it.
4. Cuisinart HM-90BCS Handheld Mixer – Best Affordable Mixer
Would you like to buy a hand mixer that looks like a million bucks, but costs less than a hundred bucks? If yes, the Cuisinart HM-90BCS Advantage Plus 9-Speed Handheld Mixer is the mixer for you.
Why You Will Like It
There are many reasons why we decided to go with this model. It’s very useful for quick, light mixing jobs as well as being easy to store. taking up hardly any space at all. It has varying speeds from very slow to whipping frenzy. Even at the slowest speed, it always starts very fast, but that’s not a problem. You know this will happen so hold it above your batter for a few seconds until it slows down.
Plus, all the attachments are excellent quality with a sturdy appearance, especially the whisk which is compact enough to use in a measuring cup or even a wide glass. On top of that, with a powerful motor, users are sure not to experience any lagging, whining noises, or the smell of the motor being overworked.
We also especially like the storage container it clicks into. It holds all the attachments neatly in one place. There will be no having to hunt for the beaters and no loose cord getting tangled up.
Some have reported that the attachments can fall out unpredictably. But we think the problem just happens when you don’t put them into their matching openings. For clarification, there are two different fitted holes for the attachments and each of them looks fairly different. If you fit them appropriately, they will never fall out. So, it’s not a big deal at all. You should in no way feel this mixer is dangerous or that you have to take any extra precautions when using it. Just be mindful about this matter before inserting the attachments.
Also, in agreement with many buyers, the cord attached to the mixer is poorly designed. It doesn’t swivel from side to side far enough to be out of your way when sitting on the counter, causing it to pull off center or just be difficult to lay flat.
From our perspective, the cord should be able to swing 180 degrees so that there’s more flexibility and it doesn’t impede smooth mixing.
Bottom line: All in all, this is really a good hand mixer, even though it’s not made for every task. If you are someone who likes to bake or finds yourself baking a lot throughout the week, then the Cuisinart HM-90BCS would be a more reasonable choice.
5. KitchenAid K45SSOB Classic Stand Mixer – Best Dough Stand Mixer
KitchenAid stands for quality, so that’s why many people highly favor this brand. And, like most KitchenAid products which epitomize quality, this one is no exception.
Why You Will Like It
This machine is great for mixing anything that requires a little elbow grease. It is durable and well-built, as well as being stylish enough to have a permanent home on your kitchen counter.
It comes with three different attachments for various uses: the dough hook which makes kneading bread a joy, the whisk which is perfect for making whipped cream or meringue, and the regular stirring attachment which is perfect for everything else. We also love how many different attachments are available for purchase so you can create a custom system for your cooking/baking preferences.
However this unit does not come with a pouring shield. It also does not have a handle on the bowl (but you can buy an extra bowl with a handle as an accessory), and that’s taken a little bit of getting used to. Aside from that though, this is definitely a great product.
Referring to the dough hook, it significantly cuts down on the amount of time required to get the job done. In less than a few minutes, the dough is evenly mixed and you can work on another step in the process at the same time since your hands are completely free. Honestly, we’ve never known a mixer could make such a difference!
The only thing that surprised us a lot is how heavy this device is. It’s hard to lift or move it on your own. But we think this is not really a big problem as long as you have it in a convenient spot in your kitchen. It’s heavy enough so that it doesn’t bounce around the counter. The heaviness does lead to more stability, and that is something we look out for before purchasing a stand mixer. But, despite the large appearance, it runs so quietly that you hardly even realize it’s switched on. It’s also so quick and efficient.
Bottom line: Being one of the best tools for any baker, this machine has turned the hardest tasks into a simple matter of throwing the ingredients in the bowl and turning on the power. Although it is a bit on the expensive side, if you don’t mind paying for quality, it certainly will never let you down. Truly, this kind of appliance will offer so many uses in your kitchen.
6. Hamilton Beach 62682RZ Hand Mixer – Best Hand Mixer
The Hamilton Beach 62682RZ is an excellent appliance to have when you need a mixer but don’t really need the power of a full-size stand mixer. Though there are an abundance of high end products which are a lot more versatile and can do a better job, you will be pleasantly surprised at how well this mixer performs for the price you pay.
- High-quality attachments
- Lightweight and compact
- Easy to store
Why You Will Like It
The machine does its tasks well, especially mixing, whisking and folding. It has a nice variation of speeds and plenty of power for all your needs. Even though the lowest speed setting isn’t very low at all and there’ll be times you’d like it to not go so fast at the start, it’s still a sturdy and powerful device for the low price, especially when you aren’t ready for a fancy stand mixer yet.
The motor gets a bit hot after extensive use but that’s to be expected. You can still make countless batches of cookie dough with this mixer and it will never let you down.
Another special feature that sets this mixer apart from other ones is its snap on case which is extremely convenient for containing the cord and keeping everything clean and organized. It also makes it easy to keep track of the beaters and whisk, and protect them from unnecessary damage in the kitchen drawer.
Many owners have a difficult time fitting the beaters, the whisk, and the power cord into their case. That’s why it would be nice if it was an inch longer so that the beaters and whisk can lay flat easily. However, we understand that this is like splitting hairs and has no bearing on the functionality and efficiency of the product.
Bottom line: Overall, the Hamilton Beach 62682RZ has exceeded our expectations. It’s a great mixer which is both versatile and budget-friendly. It lives up to everything it is advertised to be. Whether you’re learning to cook or a first time user of a mixer, this tool will be perfect for you.
So that is our list of the best mixers this year which should be helpful in suportting your buying decision. Our quest for the best products is never over and we will continue to evaluate more models and update this list as new options are added.
