Tested Using Methodology v1.0Overall Verdict
Between a product that is large but does its job and another one that is more compact and delivers similar performance, which one would you put your money on? The Waste King L-8000, while boasting more impressive specifications, with its full-horsepower motor and sound insulation feature, couldn’t manage to leave the GE Disposall Green, a small 1/2-hp garbage disposal, very far behind.
When dealing with large amounts of random foods in the standard test, the L-8000 usually yields smoother and more drain-safe results, especially when it’s vegetables or fruits. However, the disposal is not particularly good at processing bones, cooked or uncooked. This is unfortunate since we often upgrade to a powerful model in hope that it can handle tougher scraps better.
The Disposall Green, meanwhile, was very consistent and delivered solid performance in the standard test. If we’re splitting hair, the disposal indeed scored lower than the L-8000, but that was expected from such a small machine. Much to our surprise, it appeared to handle raw meat scraps better, too. That speaks a lot about the L-8000’s grinding capability as a high-power garbage disposal—although at that point, it was clear that both grinders were unfit for such tricky materials.
We think the GE Disposall Green 1/2 HP is the better choice here simply because it doesn’t take up much room under the sink, which also means it should fit in a tight space comfortably. The Waste King L-8000 could be a more attractive option if its size measures to something more, but considering that the two garbage disposals also cost the same, we’re confident with our recommendation.
