Since I first knew what a detox was, this avocado detox smoothie recipe has been one of my favorite summer drinks. Imagine the richness coming from the avocados and the sweet tanginess from the apples. A sip of that heavenly match will help you cool down instantly.
What Is Detox?
Detoxification, AKA detox, is a type of treatment that aims to cleanse all the toxins that have accumulated inside the body, which often results in unwanted health problems. The treatment includes activities such as dieting, fasting, consuming and avoiding specific types of food.
Sounds familiar? The definition reminds me of liver function. In order to help your liver function properly, you have to drink lots of water. So in a way, drinking water is the traditional way to detox your body, which I often forget…
Sometimes when things get too busy with work, I tend to stay so focused on that and often forget to drink, resulting in dehydration. This is where the smoothie comes to the rescue: its delicious taste boosts and wakes up your taste buds, making you want to drink some more. That way you can stay hydrated while drinking something delicious instead of plain old water.
Now everyone knows avocado has lots of healthy benefits because it contains so many vitamins and minerals. So, needless to say, with just one sip from the smoothie, I feel like I have been revived!
Personally I would always make a big batch of the smoothie for me to drink the whole day. I often make the smoothie at night, divide into bottles, and refrigerate. That way I can have one for breakfast, and bring a couple of bottles to work the next day.
How Long Can You Keep Avocado Smoothie?
As mentioned, I like making a big batch of smoothie and keep it in the fridge. But then there’s a problem: how long can you keep it in the fridge?
Ideally, for freshly made smoothies and juices, you would want to drink them as fast as possible. But if you like making a double batch like me, you should keep them in clean airtight bottles or jars. They can stay good for as long as 24 hours. If you leave them for any longer, check to see if there’s any weird smell or taste before you decide to throw them away.
Sometimes, for certain types of fruits, discoloration and separation will happen; your drink will look unappetizing but it is fine and still edible. Just give it a stir and you’re good to go. As for discoloration, fruits like apples and avocados get bruises quickly when oxidized; even more quickly when they’ve been processed. Solution? Trust your mouth and nose as you give it a taste. I know it might look odd, but that doesn’t always mean that it would taste odd, too.
Can You Freeze Avocado Smoothie?
Well, technically you can, but you shouldn’t.
If you are planning on freezing your smoothies, I suggest you get an airtight container or plastic bag. Frozen smoothies can be stored up to 3 months. When you need it, just take it out of the freezer and let thaw for at least 8 hours in the fridge before you drink.
However, as mentioned, you would want to consume your fresh drinks as soon as possible because they tend to go bad very quickly. Also, leaving them for too long might decrease their health benefits as they get oxidized. So if you don’t think you can drink a big batch of smoothies or juices within a day, just make a small batch so that everything stays fresh and delicious.
