Hello, internet! Welcome to Healthy Kitchen 101. A place where you can find nothing less than the best recipes and the best kitchen product reviews of the entire UNIVERSE.
I’m kidding, of course. The Universe is a pretty big place. Just the Milky Way.
And that is the best comedy I can provide.
But seriously, our content and information DO have good credibility. If I were you, I would read around a bit – you might actually find something useful.
Anyway, getting back to the main focus of this article – the best range hoods. The importance of this appliance have been stressed more and more in recent years, and it’s not without good reasons. Today, we’ll look together at why that is, and also check out the best options for range hoods on the market at the time of writing.
Indoor Air Pollutants and Why Range Hoods
If you cook, chances are your family is exposed to air pollution.
Statistically speaking, a third of the US households use natural gas cooking appliances. That’s why the total number of homes affected by indoor air pollutants is so high and why range hoods have become such a vital tool over the years.
When gas is burnt in operation of a stove, nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and carbon monoxide (CO) are created. Researches have shown that these two gases can have direct impacts on children’s respiratory system, causing symptoms including dyspnea, wheeze and frequent asthma attacks.
If your kitchen doesn’t have good ventilation, the gases will remain stuck inside until you open a window or something. However, sometimes it’s just not that simple.
In winter, we like to keep our houses as enclosed as possible to prevent heat from leaking outside too easily and keep the place warm. That means if we cook using a gas stove, the hazardous gases will be even more concentrated during times that airways are not welcomed.
Brett Singer, a staff scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), and his team presented results from one of their tests. They concluded that during a typical winter week, the level of CO and NO2 could exceed national and state ambient air quality standards if homeowners operate a gas stove to make their meals.
The potential solutions to the said indoor gas emission issue are quite obvious. For one thing, we can try opening windows or using exhaust fans too. The other thing is electric stoves, which are effective but energy (electricity) consuming. Though both solutions work relatively well, they cannot take odor head on.
Or, we can try setting up a range hood above our stove. The mechanics of these hoods are similar to that of exhaust fans but are more focused on the cooking area. Not only can they help with air ventilation, but they also eliminate cooking odors with efficiency. The pesky smell of cooking oil, among many other unpleasant aromas, will less likely be an issue.

1. Broan 41000 Series Under-Cabinet Range Hood – Best Range Hood to Buy in 2019
At the top of our list is a non-ducted, under-cabinet range hood from a widely-known brand – Broan. With the long years in the industry, the company knows what to do better than most when it comes to indoor air quality. And the economical-but-not-cheap Broan 41000 series is the prominent example.
They are 6” high and 17.5” deep units. The width varies among 24”, 30”, 36” and 42”. Built so compact yet with multiple coverage options, they can match up with various stove range types and fit in most standard kitchen settings without complicated alterations. Installation is also reviewed to be effortless by many satisfied customers, claiming that the whole process takes less than 40 minutes.
Being non-ducted hoods, these machines rely on air recirculation and charcoal filters rather than air ducting. The two-speed fan, powered by a lubricated motor that spins at 2850 RPM at top speed, will take the steam and smoke, which carry heat, odor, grease, etc., through the initial mesh filters and the charcoal, before returning them back to the room, cleansed.
There are some who argue that ducted range hoods are much better with maintaining air quality in the kitchen, which is true. However, how would you imagine to have a chimney in a moderate flat or apartment? Non-ducted hoods are the best alternative. And considering their sales, I’d say people are satisfied and still recommend the type.
One thing I forgot to mention is the suction of these models. Their performance peak at 190 CFM. In other words, these hoods can deal with up 19,000 BTUs, which is not low like some might think at all. In fact, this is perfect for a regular home kitchen with perhaps 4-burner range.
The units are also equipped with 75W light bulbs (A19) which are protected with lenses designed to distribute light evenly over the cooktop. Sadly, bulbs for future replacement are not included with the purchase but they are the common A19s which can easily be found at your local stores.
Overall, models from the 41000 series by Broan are all excellent, well-rounded choices for a normal, non-ducted kitchen. Considering the price and functions, there won’t be a better offer.
The Broan 41000 series is covered with a 1-year warranty.
2. Z Line KL2-48 Stainless Steel Wall Mount Range Hood – Best Wall Mount Range Hood
ZLine has been around for a while. You probably have seen their wall mounted range hoods in a very popular cooking reality show: Top Chef. Pay attention and you’ll see multiple units of them in the kitchen. Kitchens, professional or not, can benefit a lot from ZLine’s cost-effective range hoods.
Now let’s get back to the product: the ZLine KB series. They are all made of 430 brushed stainless steel. Their dimensions are 10.5” high and 17.7” deep, and coverage options includes 30”, 36”, 42” and 48”. Basically, if you decide to go with the series, it has got you covered.
The chimney that covers the 6” round duct is the standard 9.2” x 8”, which is understandable because of the strength of the blower (maxed out at 760 CFM). The length of the chimney, interestingly, can be modified to extend up to 32” in case you have a really, really high ceiling. Plus, an outlet transition piece with backdraft damper is also included.
The models offer 4-speed settings for different circumstances. The company recommends using speed 1-2 for light frying/boiling, 3 for heavy cooking/frying/boiling and 4 for grilling/intensive frying.
The blower’s suction varies among 280/400/580/760 CFM accordingly to the 1/2/3/4 buttons on the control panel. With 760 CFM at maximum, the hood can manage up to 75,000 BTUs or a 6-burner range with efforts to spare. Surprisingly, the range hood is comparatively quiet during operation, with highest the Sones expected at 5.8 (60 dB).
Besides the speed buttons, there are also a power button, a display, and a light button to control the 2-directional 3W LED lights. The power button can be used to activate the 3-minute delayed power-off function by simply pressing and holding the button until the display flashes three times.
Regarding the filters, the KB models are geared with baffle filters. Baffle filters are the most durable and effective means against heat and smoke. They are also dishwasher safe, which is super convenient since they are supposed to be cleaned/washed once in a while. However, you should mind the size of your dishwasher because these filters are not exactly small.
To conclude, at the price they are offering now, the ZLine KB series is an appealing purchase, no doubt. If you’re planning for a wall-mounted range hood, you should totally have a look at these models.
The ZLine KB series is covered with a 3-year warranty on parts and lifetime warranty on the motor.
3. Tatsumaki Chef 30” PS18 Under Cabinet Range Hood – Best Elite Under Cabinet Range Hood
For the folks that are fond of both neatness and technologies, this one is for you. The Chef PS18 by Tatsumaki is a relatively new under cabinet range hood model. First introduced in 2016, it has been going strong and achieving a lot of success.
As a stainless steel, under cabinet unit, it’s built with a robust yet compact frame, which is 7” high and 22” deep. Though its range options do not vary much, it does offer the most practical of sizes for a range hood: 30” and 36”. That should be sufficient for the average cooking range.
Installation/replacement is pretty standard. If you like to do it yourself, the whole process should not take more than 40 minutes, that is if your kitchen is already ducted.
Yes, it is a ducted under cabinet unit, as strange as it may sound. The recommended configuration for the duct is 6″ round or 3-1/4″ x 10″ rectangular vertical, or 3-1/4″ x 10″ rectangular horizontal discharge. This is indeed a very nice trait. I personally find versatility to be a big plus for a ducted range hood.
Now, the high-tech features of the model are quite the highlights. Instead of physical buttons, it is equipped with a touch control panel and a display for a timer, a clock, and light and speeds control, providing a contemporary experience,
In addition to the panel, the blowers, powered by a strong pair of twin motors, offer 6 speed-settings that can ultimately reach 860 CFM to take care of a burner range of combined 86,000 BTUs. That is the equivalent of an 8-burner range. Pretty strong, if you ask me.
To make matters better, Tatsumaki also put baffle filters into that combination. Compared to the typical mesh filters, baffle filters are much more effective and durable, albeit expensive. However, they’re sometimes outsize compared to the standard dishwasher. You should keep that in mind because they need to be cleaned once in a while.
All things said, the Tatsumaki Chef PS18 is absolutely a fantastic option for a ducted range hood. It offers everything a person could ask for in a modern-time product.
The Tatsumaki Chef PS18 model is covered with 2-year warranty on parts and labor.
4. Z Line GL1i-30 Stainless Steel Island Mount Range Hood – Best Island Range Hood
One thing you’ve probably noticed if you’ve been digging around the internet: ZLine have one of the best range hood collections out there. Judging by many customer reviews from different retail sites, their hoods are indeed of high quality. And for the best island range hood of this list, we chose the ZLine GL1i.
The product is a stainless steel, 36” W and 24” D unit, with a typical 6” duct outlet. The height of the whole unit can reach up to 45”. It is because of the extendable chimney, made for kitchens with high ceilings.
Note: a range hood should be installed 30”-36” above the cooking surface.
Now, about the width of island mount hoods. The ideal size should be wider, about one size (6”), than the existing range. For example, if you have a 30” stove range, you should install a 36” hood.
The reason is that with wall mount or under cabinet models, there’s the back wall. It helps trap and guide the smoke, steam, etc. But with island mount hoods, there aren’t any walls. So we need bigger coverage in order to make sure that everything is captured.
Therefore, I think it’s worth mentioning that there is also the ZLine GL2i, which is the more fancy version of the GL1i but it comes in two variants: the 42” and the 46”. In case you have larger stove ranges, you still have available options.
Back to the GL1i, there are a few more features to talk about. First is the speeds. The blower has 4 different speeds in total and its CFM peaks at 760, able to deal with up to 76,000 BTUs. together with dishwasher-safe baffle filters, having clean, un-affected indoor air is almost guaranteed.
Second, the model has 1 display, 4-speed buttons, 1 power buttons and 1 for the LED lights. There is also a 3-minute delayed auto power-off, which can be activated by holding the power button for a few seconds until the display flashes.
The ZLine GL1i is an excellent island mount range hood for a not-too-fancy kitchen. It has functional features, an impressive build with a competitive price. You’ll definitely get your money’s worth.
The ZLine GL1i is covered with a 3-year warranty on parts
5. Broan F402408 Two-Speed Range Hood – Second Best Broan Range Hood
It’s pretty strange that our two top candidates for best Broan range hoods are from two of the oldest series, isn’t it?
On second thought, no! No, it’s not. Because I think a big part of the populace appreciates the combination of simplicity and efficiency more than that of new technologies and modern designs to dazzle us all.
That is not to say the efforts put into new innovations are poorly valued. It only means that sometimes, a little bit of “old-fashion” still looks better to certain eyes. But coming back to our second best range hood series from Broan: the F40000 series.
Similar to the best selling 41000s, models from the F40000 are straightforward and bare no special traits. They are 6” H x 17.5” D units with their width ranges from 24” to 42”; they have one lubricated two-speed fan, and light bulbs covered by protective lenses that help spread the light.
But here’s a pretty nice feature: it’s convertible. Meaning it can fit in either a ducted or ductless kitchen. Sweet, right?
The default configuration is it being a ducted range hood, with a 3¼” x 10″ damper/duct and a 7” round duct adapters included. If need be, it can be modified and charcoal filters can be purchased to turn the unit into a non-ducted range hood.
This little availability is definitely handy if you plan to remodel to get some ducting going in your kitchen in the near future.
The fans and the filters used is similar to the 41000 series. The powering motor is expected to be swirling at 2850 RPM at its peak, providing suction from about 160 to 190 CFM. The low cost, dishwasher-safe mesh filters are not as good as the baffle filters, but they are not too far behind in performance.
To sum up, the Broan F40000 series is definitely worth checking out. They’re low priced and what they have to offer is just too good to look away.
The Broan 41000 series is covered with a 1-year warranty.
6. Kitchen Bath Collection HA75-LED Kitchen Range Hood – Second Best Wall Mount Range Hood
Another fantastic piece of wall mount exhaust hood is the HA75-LED from Kitchen Bath Collection. It is a great economical buy – for wall mount hood, that is – with utility like many other luxury models to provide aid to your kitchen ventilation. And people seems to appreciate that a lot.
It’s a unit with common sizing – 19.7” deep and 41” high (extended chimney). The outlet is also the typical 6” round. One thing to note is that it has the coverage of 30” wide, more suitable for a normal range than for a large one.
If you don’t want to spend too much cash on a range hood and have a cute little cooking space, this should be the perfect pick for you.
Considering the size of the burners and the kitchen, as well as its power at 410 CFM, a 4-burner that generate around 40,000 BTUs won’t be of any problem at all. Pairing that with the cleanable aluminum mesh filters, the unit positively won’t fail at keeping your kitchen air fresh and clean.
Now onto the little details. The unit has 3 speeds providing different suction for different activities, 2 high-end LED lights with 49 individual mini bulbs, and a touch-screen for display and control. The 3-minute delay timer can be used by touch the Power icon once. If you want to shut the operation immediately, simply touch it again.
One thing that I forgot to mention is that the unit can be exploited in a ductless kitchen. In the package, customers will find charcoal filters for air circulation purpose. Props to the manufacturer for the thoughts.
All thing considered, the Kitchen Bath Collection HA75-LED is a neat purchase for a small household. With a reasonable price and competent features, it’s hard to find another piece to beat this one (except for the ZLine KB, of course).
The Kitchen Bath Collection HA75-LED is covered with a 1-year warranty.
7. Cavaliere SV218D-I36 Kitchen Range Hood – Second Best Island Range Hood
Here’s our final candidate for the list of best range hoods in the final quarter of 2018: the Cavaliere SV218D-I36. Cavaliere is yet a well-known brand, but don’t think ill of it. The company has been gradually building its reputation through the years and has reaped sizable success.
the Cavaliere SV218D-I36 is a 36” 19-gauge, stainless steel, island mount range hood. Thanks to the adjustable vent cover (for 6” round duct), the total height of the entire unit can hit 44.5”, taking care of that high ceiling of yours – that is if you have one. Unfortunately, the extensions are sold separately.
Again, let’s be reminded that, unlike under cabinet or wall mount hoods, island mount hoods should be larger than your burner range. The model we have here is a 36”, meaning it’s best to pair the unit up with burners of smaller sizes.
Now that we’re done with the dimensions, let’s talk about the rest of the range hood. The control panel features 4 touch-sensitive buttons: Power, Decrease, Increase and Light; and 1 LCD display. The display indicates blower speeds as well as light level and timer countdown. Users may refer to the product’s manual for more details.
One neat thing about the unit is that it has a memory capacity. It saves users’ little modifications on light brightness, the length of delay time, etc. and will perform accordingly until changed otherwise.
The blower spins at 4 different speeds, which are controlled by the Decrease and Increase buttons. At top pace, supported by baffle filters, the unit can handle heavy-duty cooking at 900 CFM, dismissing 90,000 BTUs with ease. Although powered by a strong dual chamber motor, the unit functions at regular levels of decibels (56dB at maximum performance), which is always a nice touch.
The Cavaliere SV218D-I36 is a totally decent, well-rounded product. With all the features that matter most to a kitchen, the model will be a big help to your family, improving the air quality in an instance.
The Cavaliere SV218D-I36 is covered with a 1-year warranty.
