How To Clean An Outdoor Grill?
I get it. After a scrumptious meal, no one likes doing the dishes, let alone the grill. Cleaning, however, gives you the appreciation that perfection doesn’t come easy and you’ll feel gratitude for those who put in so much effort.
So, to clean an outdoor grill:
- Burn off the excess fat and grease.
- Disconnect the grill from the heat source: the socket (for electric grills), the propane cylinder (for propane grills), and the coal bed (for charcoal grills).
- Wait until the grate is completely cooled off, then take it out of the grill. If you cannot wait, use oven mittens or tongs to prevent burning.
- Disassemble the grill: any parts that can be submerged go straight into the sink or the dishwasher (model dependent), the remaining parts can be wiped with a clean rag and stored away or covered with a cloth.
- Take the grate out and clean it.
Of all the parts, the grate gives the most trouble. So, here’s what you do:
- Use a grill brush or a rolled up ball of aluminum foil to scrape off the burnt and charred bits stuck on the grate. Watch out for loose bristles that get caught in the grate bars, as they can cause internal bleeding if eaten.
- Don’t just scrape the grate surface: go between the bars to get at hidden pieces.
- After scraping the grate, give it a scrub using dishwasher solution and a sponge.
- Let dry. Then put back into the grill. The cleanup is done.
Notice: If your grate is made of cast-iron, you should apply a layer of seasoning: use a napkin tissue, dab it in vegetable or olive oil, then rub the soaked napkin on the grate for a few minutes. Doing this will give your grate a protective layer, as well as making the next cookout more flavorful, literally. It’s just like therapeutic massage, but for your grill.
For charcoal grills: discard the ash and cinders and then vacuum the coal bed.
A clean grill will last longer, avoid rust and corrosion better, and it can offer its service in the long run.
How To Build An Outdoor Grill Station?
For grills that don’t have side tables, it can be frustrating to find spots to place lids, condiments and cooking utensils. So, why not build your own station where everything is within reach?
If you don’t mind getting down and dirty (or you can find someone who is willing to), here’s how to build an outdoor grill station:
- Measure your grill’s dimensions. This is the most critical step.
- Select the spot for your grill outdoors.
- Clear out the area (grass, obstacles, etc. if any).
- Flatten the ground.
- Lay the foundation layer of sand. The last thing you want is a slanted or tilted station.
- Place the cinder blocks from the center and proceed outward, filling the marked area. Make sure that the blocks fit closely at a perpendicular with one another. Use mastic and rock glue to connect the blocks.
- Build the next cinder blocks on from the rock foundation, until it reaches the desired height.
- Put on a finish touch layer of marble stone of choice.
- Put your grill into the station.
